What is the Examen?

The Examen is a chance for us to stop and reflect on the day's events, and thank God for all His blessings. It is adapted from the Spiritual Exercises written by St. Ignatius of Loyola.

The Steps

  • Gratitude

God has given us so much to be grateful for. Look into your daily life and call to mind all that you have to be grateful for. Who has helped you realize these blessings?

  • Petition

Ask God for His help. He wants to be our friend. He wants to help us through our daily struggles.

  • Discern

Think about your day. St. Ignatius teaches us to see God in all things. Where was God for you? Did you see Him in other people? Did you see Him in the nature around you?

  • Forgiveness

Jesus teaches us that God will forgive any sinner. What have you done that warrants forgiveness? Call to mind these things and ask for God's forgiveness.

  • Resolution

Look to tomorrow and think of ways that you can make your relationship with God stronger. Will you look closer for Him in your daily life? Will you thank Him more for what He has done for you? What ever it is, keep Him in mind when going about your daily life.
